Synopsis

Troubled teenager Jim Grimson is institutionalized after his behavior finally spirals beyond control. There he encounters an unusual form of therapy based on Philip José Farmer’s own World of Tiers novels. Through the treatment, Jim enters—or believes he enters—the fantastic realm of Tiers, a universe of strange worlds ruled by powerful, nearly immortal Lords.

As Jim identifies with the fierce Red Orc, his journey through this dangerous fantasy landscape becomes intertwined with his struggle to understand his own anger and identity. Farmer deliberately blurs the boundary between psychological therapy and genuine fantastic adventure, turning the familiar World of Tiers setting into something quite different from the earlier novels.

EugeneBookStore Summary

An unusual entry in Philip José Farmer’s celebrated World of Tiers series, Red Orc’s Rage combines the imaginative parallel-world adventure of the earlier books with a psychological story grounded in a real therapeutic technique. It works both as another journey into Farmer’s universe of pocket worlds and as a more experimental exploration of how fantasy and storytelling can help someone confront problems in the real world.
