Condition Notes This copy is in Good used condition with moderate overall shelf and reading wear. The front cover has noticeable rubbing and scuffing across the large metallic lettering, along with edge wear, surface scratches, and several small creases. The corners show heavier wear, particularly the lower-right corner, which has a noticeable crease and small area of peeling/color loss.

Despite the cosmetic wear, the cover remains intact, the artwork and lettering are clearly readable, and the book presents reasonably well for an older mass-market paperback. I would grade this Good, not Reader's Copy.

Synopsis

Veterinarian Frannie O’Neill is trying to rebuild her life in the isolated Colorado mountains when a mysterious FBI agent named Kit Harrison arrives investigating a series of strange events. Neither realizes that they are about to uncover a secret hidden behind the walls of a supposedly legitimate research facility.

Then Frannie encounters Max, an extraordinary eleven-year-old girl who has escaped from the laboratory. Max looks human—but she has wings.

She is one of several children created through terrifying genetic experiments, and the people responsible are determined to recover their subjects before anyone discovers what they’ve done.

Frannie and Kit are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy as they attempt to protect Max and the other children while exposing a scientific project capable of changing humanity forever.

EugeneBookStore Summary

When the Wind Blows combines James Patterson’s rapid thriller pacing with science fiction, medical experimentation, conspiracy, and an unusual group of genetically altered children.

At the heart of the story is Max—a young girl who can fly but has spent much of her life treated as a laboratory experiment. When veterinarian Frannie O’Neill discovers her, protecting Max quickly becomes a fight against powerful people determined to keep their research secret.

Readers who know Patterson primarily through Alex Cross may find this one particularly interesting because it moves into medical and science-fiction territory while retaining his familiar short chapters, cliffhangers, and fast-moving suspense.

Collector Notes

This is the Warner Vision mass-market paperback edition, ISBN 9780446607650 / 0446607657.

When the Wind Blows is also noteworthy because it predates Patterson’s later Maximum Ride young-adult series and features genetically engineered winged children, including a character named Max. However, the later Maximum Ride novels are generally treated as a separate reimagining rather than direct sequels to this novel.

The story continues in The Lake House, making this Book #1 of the two-book When the Wind Blows series.

This is a common Patterson paperback rather than a scarce collectible, but its connection to Patterson’s later Maximum Ride concept gives it more reader interest than an ordinary standalone backlist thriller.
