Synopsis

Far beyond the reaches of ordinary civilization lies a forgotten world where advanced technology has long since become indistinguishable from magic. Into this strange land comes a cyborg—an engineered human whose body is sustained by sophisticated machinery but whose only desire is to live a peaceful existence. Instead, he finds himself caught between rival sorcerers, mysterious robots, ambitious apprentices, and ancient technologies that the inhabitants mistake for supernatural powers.

As alliances shift and hidden motives emerge, the cyborg discovers that the world’s “magic” is actually the legacy of an incredibly advanced civilization whose scientific achievements have been misunderstood for generations. Powerful machines masquerade as enchanted artifacts, artificial intelligences are worshipped as mystical beings, and forgotten technology shapes the political struggles of kingdoms that no longer understand the forces controlling their destinies.

The story follows multiple memorable characters whose conflicting goals gradually intertwine. A weary robot longs for oblivion after centuries of service, a determined apprentice dreams of becoming a true sorcerer, while the reluctant cyborg struggles to survive in a society where reason and superstition collide. Lawrence Watt-Evans skillfully blends humor, adventure, philosophical questions, and imaginative world-building into a unique science fantasy that examines how knowledge can become myth when history is forgotten.

EugeneBookStore Summary

The Cyborg and the Sorcerers is one of Lawrence Watt-Evans’ most inventive standalone novels, seamlessly blending science fiction and fantasy into a clever adventure where advanced technology becomes the basis for magic. Filled with intelligent characters, witty dialogue, and imaginative concepts, the novel offers an entertaining exploration of Clarke’s famous principle that sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. It remains a hidden gem for readers who enjoy both classic fantasy and science fiction.

Collector Notes

Published by Del Rey Books in 1982, The Cyborg and the Sorcerers is an increasingly collectible example of early science fantasy from Lawrence Watt-Evans before his popular Ethshar series. First Del Rey paperback editions are becoming more difficult to locate in attractive condition, particularly with bright cover colors and a solid spine. The novel is appreciated by collectors for its imaginative premise and for representing the author’s talent for combining humor, thoughtful storytelling, and original speculative ideas.
