Synopsis

In sixteenth-century Florida, a young Toco warrior named Throat Shot survives a near-fatal wound and receives a mysterious command from the spirit Dead Eagle. He must find a magical crystal capable of protecting his people from a terrible danger approaching from the East.

His quest carries him across Native North America, where he becomes known as Tale Teller and encounters different peoples, languages, legends, and traditions. Eventually his journey brings him face-to-face with disease, slavery, and the violent arrival of Hernando de Soto’s Spanish conquistadors.

EugeneBookStore Summary

One of Piers Anthony’s most unusual novels and a major departure from his better-known Xanth fantasy series. Tatham Mound blends historical fiction, Native American mythology, archaeology, and adventure into an ambitious story of pre-Columbian and early-contact North America. Anthony himself described it as the historical novel of which he was most proud.

Collector Notes

This 1992 Avon mass-market paperback is notable for being based on archaeological research at the real Tatham Mound in Florida. Piers Anthony helped finance the archaeological investigation that inspired the novel, and he spent approximately five years researching and writing the story. The paperback contains an extensive author’s note discussing the historical and archaeological background behind the novel.
