Synopsis

Esmay Suiza and Brun Meager are both intelligent, courageous and independent—but that doesn’t mean they like each other. Their uneasy relationship becomes even more complicated when Brun’s interest in Barin Serrano collides with Esmay’s own feelings for him.

Then Brun is captured by a brutally repressive religious militia. Esmay becomes entangled in the aftermath and finds herself disgraced and suspected of helping cause the disaster. With Brun’s powerful family opposing her involvement and Barin’s attention being pursued elsewhere, Esmay faces both professional and personal turmoil.

For Brun, however, the situation is far more desperate. Pregnant and held prisoner on a world where female captives are surgically mutilated and controlled, she must find a way not only to survive but to protect the other prisoners around her. Her determination to fight back threatens the rescue effort—but surrender has never been Brun’s style.

Elizabeth Moon combines military action, rescue operations, political conflict and the complicated personal relationships of her recurring characters in this darker installment of the Serrano Legacy.

EugeneBookStore Summary

The fifth Serrano Legacy novel continues the story of Esmay Suiza while bringing Brun Meager into a dangerous conflict that raises the stakes considerably from Once a Hero. It combines the military-SF elements Elizabeth Moon is known for with strong character development, political intrigue and a particularly intense survival storyline.

An important middle volume for anyone collecting the complete Serrano Legacy and a good choice for readers who enjoy character-centered military space opera with strong female protagonists.
