Synopsis

A terrifying scientific possibility threatens the entire planet when evidence emerges that someone has discovered a way to manipulate the Earth’s magnetic poles. What begins as a series of strange oceanic events soon points toward a conspiracy capable of triggering catastrophic changes on a global scale.

NUMA Special Assignments Team leader Kurt Austin, along with Joe Zavala and the rest of the NUMA team, is pulled into the mystery. Their investigation leads from dangerous waters and violent storms to a decades-old scientific secret involving a brilliant Hungarian researcher whose discoveries may have fallen into the wrong hands.

As the conspirators move closer to putting their plan into action, Austin must determine how the technology works and stop it before the Earth’s natural forces are turned into a weapon. The result is a fast-moving Cussler adventure filled with ocean exploration, science, historical secrets, international intrigue, and large-scale disaster.

Readers who enjoy Cussler’s mixture of real scientific ideas, historical mysteries, advanced technology, ocean exploration, and enormous global threats should especially enjoy this installment. With Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala racing to prevent a worldwide catastrophe, it has the fast pace and spectacular action expected from the NUMA Files.

Collector Notes

Polar Shift is the sixth NUMA Files adventure and comes from the established Clive Cussler–Paul Kemprecos period of the series. First published in hardcover in 2005, this Berkley mass market edition followed in 2006 and is a good choice for readers building an affordable matching paperback run of the Kurt Austin adventures. The book is not particularly scarce, so condition has a strong effect on resale value. This copy’s visible cover and edge wear makes it better suited as a reading or series-completion copy than a premium collectible, but the distinctive early NUMA Files cover design still displays nicely.
