Synopsis

World War II has reached a critical stage, and Lieutenant Nick Hamilton is about to face the greatest test of his naval career.

Hamilton is selected to command a secret force of Allied submarines on a dangerous series of missions deep inside enemy-controlled waters. Operating outside the ordinary rules of naval warfare, Hamilton and his crews must rely on stealth, nerve, and unconventional tactics as they strike at Axis forces while constantly risking discovery and destruction.

The missions take the so-called Devil Flotilla into some of the most dangerous waters of the war, including operations connected with the desperate Allied situation at Dunkirk. Hamilton knows that his submarines may be making history—but that will mean little if none of them survive to tell the story.

EugeneBookStore Summary

Devil Flotilla is classic old-school naval adventure: submarines, covert missions, enemy waters, daring commanders, and the constant threat of destruction beneath the surface.

Edwyn Gray specialized in naval history and fiction, and that background gives the novel a convincing wartime atmosphere. This is especially appealing for readers who enjoy World War II submarine fiction, Royal Navy adventures, military thrillers, and authors such as Douglas Reeman and Alexander Fullerton.

Even better for series readers, this is Book #2 of the four-book Nick Hamilton series, making it a nice pickup for someone trying to assemble the original paperback sequence.

Collector Notes

This particular copy is more interesting than an ordinary modern reprint. It is the 1981 Pinnacle Books mass-market paperback, ISBN 9780523414058, from Pinnacle’s vintage war-fiction line. The Nick Hamilton novels have a relatively small modern readership, but original paperback copies can be surprisingly difficult to find. Current marketplace evidence shows this exact ISBN offered in Fair condition for substantially more than an ordinary $5 used paperback, while another used-book marketplace starts Devil Flotilla considerably above typical mass-market paperback pricing.

For EugeneBookStore, I would therefore not treat this as a routine $5 Good-condition paperback. The visible wear lowers its grade, but the scarcity of this particular older edition gives it some additional value.
