Synopsis

Raised together from childhood, Saul and Chris are orphans transformed into elite operatives by Eliot, the intelligence officer who becomes their surrogate father. Their unusual upbringing creates a bond stronger than friendship—they regard themselves as brothers.

As adults, they become extraordinarily capable covert agents, carrying out dangerous assignments around the world. But when events force them to question the organization they have served and the man they trusted, the brothers discover that their greatest threat may come from within their own world.

Suddenly hunted by the very intelligence network that trained them, Saul and Chris must rely on their skills, instincts and loyalty to one another to survive. What follows is a fast-moving international thriller involving assassins, espionage, betrayal and a secret capable of turning allies into enemies.

EugeneBookStore Summary

Before Jason Bourne dominated the spy-thriller shelves, David Morrell was already writing this kind of relentless international chase thriller.

Best known as the creator of Rambo in First Blood, Morrell takes a different direction here, building the story around two highly trained operatives whose relationship as brothers gives the action considerably more emotional weight than a conventional spy adventure.

The Brotherhood of the Rose combines Cold War espionage, covert operations, assassinations and international pursuit with a compelling central question: What happens when men trained to trust their handlers discover that the people giving the orders may be their greatest enemies?

It’s an excellent EugeneBookStore recommendation for readers of Robert Ludlum, Frederick Forsyth, Ken Follett and early Tom Clancy, particularly customers who enjoy older espionage thrillers with plenty of action.

Collector Notes

The Brotherhood of the Rose was originally published in 1984 and became one of David Morrell’s major novels beyond First Blood. It begins the trilogy followed by The Fraternity of the Stone and The League of Night and Fog.

This copy is the Fawcett Crest mass-market paperback, identifiable by the cover number 20661-0 and ISBN 978-0-449-20661-4.

The book also has crossover interest for collectors of vintage espionage paperbacks and David Morrell’s work. It was adapted into a 1989 television miniseries, giving the title additional recognition beyond the novel itself.

This particular copy is primarily a reading/nostalgia copy rather than a collector-grade example because of the visible cover wear and creasing.
