| Condition Notes | This is a notably clean copy for a late-1990s mass-market paperback. The front cover remains bright and glossy with only light edge/corner rubbing and minor surface wear. I do not see major creasing, tears, stickers or significant color loss.
The back also presents well, with minor edge wear and light surface rubbing. The ISBN label and barcode are intact and readable. |

Professor Edward Kitchener, a brilliant quantum cosmologist working with the powerful Event Horizon corporation, has been brutally murdered. The circumstances point toward espionage, revenge or someone among the gifted young researchers surrounding him—but the evidence refuses to fit together.
Event Horizon turns to Greg Mandel, a former Mindstar Battalion operative whose biotechnology-enhanced abilities give him unusual empathic and intuitive powers.
What begins as a murder investigation develops into a technologically complex mystery involving Kitchener’s research, Greg’s own past and the unsettling possibility that conventional assumptions about reality itself may be wrong. Pan Macmillan
A Quantum Murder combines two genres particularly well: near-future cyberpunk and detective fiction.
Rather than placing its mystery in a distant galaxy, Hamilton builds it around a recognizable future Britain transformed by climate change, advanced biotechnology, artificial intelligence and powerful corporations. Greg Mandel functions as both detective and science-fiction protagonist.
It’s also a manageable introduction to Peter F. Hamilton compared with his enormous later space-opera novels. A customer who likes it has a straightforward three-book sequence to continue.
A Quantum Murder first appeared in Britain in 1994. The first U.S. hardcover followed from Tor in 1997, ISBN 9780312859541. Open Library
The scanned copy is the 1998 Tor mass-market paperback, ISBN 9780812555240. Bibliographic records describe this as the first U.S. Tor mass-market paperback edition, with 384 pages. Goodreads
The cover itself provides another useful identification point: it credits Barclay Shaw for the cover art and Carol Russo for cover design.
The novel has subsequently appeared in numerous editions and was later collected with Mindstar Rising in The Mandel Files, Volume 1. Goodreads currently groups roughly 35 editions of the work, so it is extensively reprinted rather than scarce. Goodreads
Collector Importance: Low to moderate. This isn’t the first edition of the novel, but it is an early U.S. edition with its period Tor/Barclay Shaw cover. The unusually clean exterior makes it more desirable as part of a matching Greg Mandel trilogy.
