Synopsis

A brutal murder has gone unpunished, and one grieving grandfather is determined to see justice done.

The man he turns to is Calvin Dexter, a seemingly ordinary New Jersey attorney with a hidden past. Years earlier, Dexter served as a highly skilled soldier in Vietnam. Now he secretly uses those abilities to hunt down criminals who have escaped the reach of conventional justice.

His target is a ruthless Serbian warlord responsible for the death of an American volunteer. Finding him means following a trail across continents and penetrating layers of protection surrounding a man who believes himself untouchable.

But Dexter’s mission soon collides with a much larger intelligence operation. As the CIA pursues its own objectives, hunter and hunted become pieces in a dangerous international game where justice, revenge, and national security may be impossible to separate.

EugeneBookStore Summary

Frederick Forsyth returns to the territory that made The Day of the Jackal a classic: meticulous planning, international intrigue, intelligence agencies, and a highly capable man pursuing an extraordinarily difficult target.

Avenger combines a personal revenge story with the machinery of a global espionage thriller. Calvin Dexter is particularly appealing—a quiet professional whose ordinary appearance hides an exceptional and dangerous past.

A strong choice for readers of Tom Clancy, Ken Follett, Robert Ludlum, Jack Higgins, and Daniel Silva.

Collector Notes

This is the St. Martin’s mass-market paperback edition of Frederick Forsyth’s Avenger, ISBN 9780312997229. It features the distinctive black cover with oversized green-and-pink lettering and the tagline “Vengeance Is a Personal War.” This is a later paperback rather than a first edition and is primarily desirable as an inexpensive reading copy or as part of a Frederick Forsyth collection. The substantial sticker-removal damage at the upper right reduces collector appeal, although the primary cover design remains attractive and recognizable.
