Synopsis

Alex Cross has faced killers who threatened his career and his life, but this time the attack is devastatingly personal.

A brilliant and ruthless enemy has taken Cross’s entire family—his wife Bree, Nana Mama and his children. With the people he loves apparently ripped away from him, Cross is pushed toward despair while his adversary carefully manipulates him.

But Cross refuses to surrender.

Convinced that there is more to the nightmare than he has been allowed to see, he begins searching for the truth while struggling to remain focused enough to outthink an opponent who seems to anticipate his every move.

The confrontation that began in Cross My Heart reaches its conclusion here, making Hope to Die one of the more personal and emotionally intense entries in the Alex Cross series.

EugeneBookStore Summary

This is an especially important Alex Cross novel for customers reading the series in order because Hope to Die directly continues the cliffhanger ending of Cross My Heart.

James Patterson strips away much of what normally gives Alex Cross his strength. His family—the center of his life throughout the series—has become the weapon being used against him.

That creates a different kind of Alex Cross thriller. Cross isn’t simply investigating another killer; he’s fighting through grief, uncertainty and psychological manipulation while desperately searching for evidence that might lead him back to his family.

The result combines Patterson’s trademark rapid pacing with unusually high personal stakes. Readers who enjoy the family side of Alex Cross’s character will find this installment particularly significant.

For the best reading experience, customers should read Cross My Heart immediately before this book because Hope to Die completes the storyline begun there.

Collector Notes

Hope to Die was originally published in hardcover in 2014. The pictured copy is the later 2015 Little, Brown and Company mass-market paperback, ISBN 9781455515837. The publisher lists this exact ISBN as a mass-market edition released September 29, 2015.

Its strongest series appeal comes from its close connection with Cross My Heart. The two books effectively form a continuing story, so having both available together could make an attractive Alex Cross pairing for EugeneBookStore customers.

This isn’t a scarce edition—the used marketplace has substantial inventory—but Alex Cross remains a highly recognizable series, making inexpensive numbered volumes useful bookstore stock.
