Synopsis

Alex Cross has left the Washington, D.C. police department and entered a new chapter of his career with the FBI. His first major case quickly proves that changing agencies hasn’t made his life any safer.

Men and women are being abducted across the country in broad daylight and disappearing without a trace. Cross discovers that the victims aren’t being held for ordinary ransom—they are being bought and sold through a secret criminal operation.

Behind it appears to be a mysterious and exceptionally dangerous figure known only as the Wolf. As the FBI struggles to uncover the organization, Cross becomes increasingly frustrated by bureaucracy and begins pushing the investigation in his own way.

At the same time, trouble follows him home when his former fiancée Christine Johnson reenters his life, leaving Cross fighting battles on both professional and personal fronts.

EugeneBookStore Summary

A major turning point in the Alex Cross series, The Big Bad Wolf moves Cross from the familiar world of Washington homicide investigations into the much larger arena of the FBI.

James Patterson uses that transition to broaden the scope considerably. Instead of pursuing a single local murderer, Cross finds himself confronting a sophisticated criminal network operating across the country and a mastermind whose true identity remains tantalizingly out of reach.

The novel still delivers everything Alex Cross readers expect—short chapters, rapid twists, psychological tension and Cross’s willingness to ignore procedure when lives are at stake—but the FBI setting gives the story a different scale.

It’s also an important installment for readers following Cross in order because events here lead directly toward the continuing confrontation in London Bridges.

Collector Notes

The Big Bad Wolf is Book #9 in James Patterson’s Alex Cross series, following Four Blind Mice and preceding London Bridges. The novel was originally published in hardcover in 2003; this copy is the 2004 Warner mass-market paperback edition, ISBN 978-0-446-61022-3.

The sequence around this volume is:

#7 Violets Are Blue → #8 Four Blind Mice → #9 The Big Bad Wolf → #10 London Bridges

This installment is especially useful to series collectors because it marks Cross’s transition to the FBI and begins a storyline that continues into the following novel. It isn’t a scarce paperback, so its value is primarily as a numbered Alex Cross series volume rather than as a collectible edition.
