Synopsis

Washington, D.C. detective and psychologist Alex Cross is called into a disturbing series of murders in one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. The victims initially attract little public attention, but Cross sees something others have missed—the killings aren’t random.

Behind the murders is a sophisticated and extraordinarily dangerous adversary who calls himself Death, a man connected to a secret and deadly game involving three other participants known collectively as the Four Horsemen.

Cross becomes increasingly convinced that the killer is hiding behind a position of privilege and respectability. Proving it is another matter. His investigation brings him into conflict with powerful people while the murderer becomes increasingly aware of Cross.

At the same time, Cross is trying to build a future with Christine Johnson, forcing him to balance the possibility of happiness at home against an investigation that is becoming increasingly personal and dangerous.

EugeneBookStore Summary

Alex Cross faces one of the strangest and most calculating adversaries of his early career in Pop Goes the Weasel.

This fifth installment expands beyond a straightforward serial-killer investigation into a darker game involving four men who have adopted the identities of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Cross must unravel how the killings are connected while pursuing an adversary protected by intelligence, status, and influence.

The combination of Washington politics, psychological warfare, police investigation, and Cross’s personal life makes this an important early entry in the series. Patterson keeps the chapters short and the tension high, making it an especially accessible choice for readers who like fast-moving crime fiction.

Customers who enjoyed Along Came a Spider, Kiss the Girls, or Jack & Jill should feel immediately at home here.
