Synopsis

San Francisco erupts after an angry mob surrounds and murders an innocent Black man. Kevin Shea, a young white man who actually tried to stop the killing, is photographed during the chaos. The misleading image makes it appear that he participated in the crime, and suddenly Kevin becomes the most wanted man in a city already boiling with racial tension.

As riots spread and politicians seize on the crisis, homicide lieutenant Abe Glitsky is ordered to bring Shea in. But Glitsky begins to suspect that the public story surrounding the murder is dangerously wrong.

Meanwhile, Kevin is trapped between police determined to arrest him, criminals who know what really happened, and political figures eager to exploit the case. With law and order beginning to collapse, proving the truth may be the only way to prevent another innocent person from dying.

EugeneBookStore Summary

One photograph has made an innocent man the most hated person in San Francisco.

Kevin Shea tried to stop a murder. Instead, a photograph taken during the chaos makes him look guilty, turning him into the target of police, politicians, the media, and the actual killers.

As violence spreads across San Francisco, Lieutenant Abe Glitsky begins questioning the official story. What follows is a tense combination of murder investigation, political manipulation, racial conflict, and a desperate search for the truth.

A Certain Justice is an excellent choice for readers who enjoy intelligent crime fiction where the investigation goes far beyond simply discovering who committed the crime.

Collector Notes

A Certain Justice was originally published in 1995 and occupies an interesting place in John Lescroart’s interconnected San Francisco novels. Although frequently grouped with the larger Dismas Hardy universe, Abe Glitsky is the central recurring character, and modern publisher listings classify this as Abe Glitsky #1. This copy is the February 2006 Signet/Berkley mass-market paperback reissue, ISBN 9780451217769. It is not a scarce collectible edition, but it is an appealing series starter for readers collecting Lescroart’s Glitsky novels or his broader San Francisco crime fiction.
