Synopsis

High-school English teacher Jake Epping lives an ordinary life in Maine until his friend Al reveals an extraordinary secret: a portal hidden inside his diner leads back to 1958.

Al has an ambitious idea. If someone stays in the past long enough, perhaps one of the defining tragedies of modern American history can be prevented—the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963.

Jake accepts the challenge and enters a world of late-1950s and early-1960s America, eventually assuming a new identity and beginning the long process of determining whether Lee Harvey Oswald truly acted alone. But the past does not want to be changed, and every attempt to alter history produces unexpected consequences.

Along the way, Jake’s mission becomes much more personal when he builds a life—and falls in love—in a time that was never supposed to be his own.

11/22/63 combines time travel, historical fiction, suspense, romance, and King’s fascination with the consequences of seemingly small decisions into one of his most ambitious novels.

EugeneBookStore Summary

This is one of Stephen King’s standout later novels and an excellent choice even for readers who normally don’t consider themselves horror fans.

Instead of traditional supernatural horror, King builds a massive time-travel thriller around the JFK assassination, asking a deceptively simple question: What if someone actually could go back and stop it?

The historical setting is a major part of the experience. King immerses the reader in late-1950s and early-1960s America while gradually moving Jake toward Dallas and November 22, 1963. But underneath the historical mystery is a surprisingly emotional story about love, sacrifice, destiny, and whether changing history is necessarily the same thing as improving it.

At more than 800 pages, this is a substantial novel, but its combination of history, suspense and time travel has given it appeal well beyond King’s traditional horror audience.

Collector Notes

This ISBN—9781451627282—belongs to the original Scribner hardcover released November 8, 2011. The publisher currently lists it as the hardcover edition.

First-printing copies are considerably more interesting to King collectors. Stephen King’s official first-edition guide identifies the required first-printing number line as 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2, along with the First Scribner hardcover edition statement.

The market supports a significant premium for confirmed first printings: a Very Good first-edition/first-printing hardcover with dust jacket recently sold on eBay for $34.00, while AbeBooks currently has collectible first-edition copies around $35–$49.

So I would not price this copy as a collectible first printing until we verify the copyright page.
