| Condition Notes | This copy shows moderate to fairly heavy exterior wear, but remains a serviceable reading copy. The front cover has rubbing, scratches and numerous surface creases, with heavier wear along the top edge and corners. There are several noticeable diagonal creases in the upper-right portion and additional edge rubbing around the perimeter. The dark cover shows scuffing readily, although the metallic title lettering and cover design remain clear and attractive.
There is enough wear that I would keep this firmly at Good rather than Very Good, but the cover remains intact and presentable. |

Computer expert, artist and professional criminal Kidd knows how to operate on both sides of the law. His partner LuEllen is an accomplished burglar—and together they make a formidable team of modern con artists.
Their latest assignment comes from a defense-industry corporation that wants its competition eliminated. Kidd and LuEllen are hired to infiltrate the rival company and use computer sabotage to bring it down. If everything works, they’ll make millions.
At first, the operation seems almost perfect. Kidd’s technical skills and LuEllen’s ability to get into places she doesn’t belong keep them ahead of their targets. But corporate espionage turns out to be considerably more dangerous than ordinary computer crime.
As their successful operation begins unraveling, Kidd discovers that the people manipulating them may be running a much bigger con of their own. Suddenly the two professional deceivers must figure out who is really controlling the game before they become its victims.
EugeneBookStore Summary
The Fool’s Run introduces one of John Sandford’s lesser-known but especially entertaining creations: Kidd, a computer expert, painter, hacker and professional criminal who operates in the gray area between hero and con man.
Along with the talented burglar LuEllen, Kidd takes readers into a world of corporate espionage, computer sabotage and elaborate cons. Considering the novel was originally written in 1989, its focus on hacking and technologically driven corporate warfare also gives it an interesting early-tech-thriller flavor.
Fans who know Sandford primarily through Lucas Davenport and the Prey novels may particularly enjoy discovering this different side of his work. It’s fast, clever and built around characters who survive as much through intelligence and deception as physical action.
Most importantly for the bookstore, this is Book #1, making it the ideal starting point for customers interested in collecting Sandford’s Kidd novels.
Collector Notes
This is the first novel in the Kidd series, although the publishing history can be confusing. The Fool’s Run originally appeared in 1989 under Sandford’s real name, John Camp, before being reissued under the much better-known John Sandford name.
ISBN 9780425155721 / 0425155722 identifies the December 1996 mass-market edition. It isn’t scarce—Alibris currently shows roughly 149 copies across editions—so its value is primarily as a reading and series-building copy rather than a collectible first edition.
The Kidd #1 status should nevertheless be prominently displayed in the EugeneBookStore listing.
