Synopsis

A team of archaeologists is excavating the ruins of a medieval French village when they make an impossible discovery: a handwritten message from their professor, Edward Johnston, dated more than six hundred years in the past. Johnston has vanished after traveling to the headquarters of a powerful technology company, and his students soon discover that the corporation has developed a revolutionary method of transporting people into another time.

To rescue him, several members of the team are sent directly into 14th-century France during the Hundred Years’ War. Their academic knowledge suddenly becomes a matter of survival as they encounter fortified castles, brutal combat, political intrigue, and a society far more dangerous than anything they studied.

With only a limited amount of time to find Johnston and return home, the group must use their knowledge of history to survive history itself. Crichton blends quantum technology, archaeology, medieval warfare, and relentless adventure into one of his most cinematic thrillers.

EugeneBookStore Summary

Timeline is Michael Crichton at his most adventurous, combining cutting-edge science with a full-scale medieval adventure. Instead of simply observing the past, Crichton’s characters are dropped directly into it, where swords, castles, sieges, and political rivalries become very real threats. Readers who enjoy the scientific ideas of Jurassic Park combined with historical adventure should find this an especially entertaining Crichton novel.

Collector Notes

Originally published in 1999, Timeline became a #1 New York Times bestseller and was adapted into the 2003 feature film directed by Richard Donner. This Ballantine mass market edition is the movie tie-in printing, prominently displaying “Now a Major Motion Picture” on the front and using artwork associated with the film’s release. Movie tie-in editions can be interesting additions to an author collection because they represent a specific moment in a book’s publishing and adaptation history. This is not a scarce edition, but its attractive condition makes it a nice copy for a Michael Crichton collection.
